Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for assistance through VLS, an organization must be a charitable entity that is community based in Ontario and serves the public interest.

VLS aims to assist organizations whose mandate is to help the marginalized and improve the quality of life for fellow Ontarians. Pursued activities can include, but are not limited to: building affordable housing, creating jobs and economic growth in low-income neighborhoods, providing essential services to the elderly, the young and those with special needs, and protecting the environment.

Due to limited resources, VLS generally does not assist organizations that fall under the category of mutual benefit not-for-profit corporations, as defined in the Primer for Directors of Not-for-Profit Corporations, published by Industry Canada, February 2002. According to the Primer: "mutual benefit not-for-profit corporations carry on activities that are primarily for the benefit of their members. They are typically supported by their members through fees and fees-for service programs or activities. Examples of mutual benefit corporations are trade associations, professional societies, golf clubs, social clubs, etc."

VLS does not assist individuals seeking assistance. If you are in need of personal legal help, please contact the nearest Legal Aid office or the Law Society's Lawyer Referral Service.

VLS reviews the merits of all applications on a case-by-case basis.

If you are not sure if your organization qualifies for assistance, please feel free to speak directly with the VLS Project Coordinator.
